I’ve never seen a live carnival before. I don’t really know what it means. But one thing is certain—since last night, this carnival has changed the heartbeat of Mazatlan. The ship has finally set sail again! And just like all of us gathered here, this carnival carries the weight of the joys we didn’t get to live for two years.
Since yesterday, we are a crowd again. We smile at everyone and everything, like children seeing the world for the first time. We fill the malecón, rediscovering the city together. Even the moon has joined the celebration. And the pulmonías—those open-air taxis—glow like centipedes, dancing to the rhythm of the tambora.

From our visit to Mazatlán in late February 2021, during Carnival.
