Walking Guanajuato

A cozy open-air café in Guanajuato City, surrounded by vibrant old Mexican homes, with pigeons on the sidewalk and in flight.

Guanajuato is a bowl shaped by the wind. Its houses, like colored pearls, stack upon one another, each competing for the sun’s attention. From the deepest corners of its alleyways to the heights where balconies defy the void, the city breathes with the air of four centuries.

In the six weeks we lived in Guanajuato, we became well-versed in the art of climbing stairs of every size. We also learned to lose ourselves in its twisting alleyways.

And let’s not even begin to talk about the skill required to navigate sidewalks that narrow until they vanish. That bowl, cradled by the rocks, is one of a kind—a concave palm resting in the hand of the mountains.
